Falcons runners-up in senior rugby standings

SHELBURNE – The Centre Wellington Falcons grabbed a second-place finish in the District 4/10 high school senior boys’ rugby league standings with a 24-19 victory over the Centre Dufferin Royals Thursday.

While the Ross Royals finished atop the league at 5-0-0, Centre Wellington was second at 3-2-0. The Falcons also got bonus points for scoring four or more tries in a game and for losing by less than seven points. Those bonus points gave Centre Wellington second place as Erin Raiders also finished at 3-2-0, but they had fewer bonus points. Guelph CVI finished at 2-3-0 while both Centennial Spartans and Centre Dufferin finished at 1-4-0, the Spartans finishing higher as they had one more bonus point than Centre Dufferin.

Caleb Willmets had two tries for the Falcons in the win over Centre Dufferin while Michael Chapman and Koen Ashdown each scored a try and Ethan Kosempel kicked two converts.

Aidan Oliver had two tries for Centre Dufferin and Tristan Goodfellow had one. Ben Callegari added two converts.

Ross is to get a bye in Tuesday’s quarter-finals while Erin is to host Centre Dufferin and Centennial and GCVI are to tangle at Varsity Field.

Jon Howie had three tries for Ross and Calvin Fogler kicked three converts. Getting one try apiece were Malcolm Currie and Noah Van Dam.

Nick Baker had a try for Centennial.

 

Junior Boys

Ross 42 Centre Dufferin 7

Ross clinched first with the win. Ross is at 5-0-0 while Centre Dufferin is at 3-2-0, Guelph CVI is at 2-3-0 and Erin is at 0-5-0.

The regular season is to wrap up Tuesday and the semifinals are set for Thursday.

Scorers for Ross in Thursday’s win were not reported.

Brady Marshall had a try for Centre Dufferin and Aidan Mackenzie converted it.

 

Girls

Orangeville 20 Centre Wellington 5

Orangeville claimed a second-place finish in Pool B with the win.

Holly Bonney-Brookman scored two tries for the Scarlet Bears while Rebecca Hodder and Daniela Aboy-Fernandez each had one.

Maddie Hodgson scored the try for Centre Wellington.

Ross finished first in the pool at 4-0-0 and the Royals are followed by Orangeville at 3-1-0, Centre Wellington at 2-2-0, GCVI at 1-3-0 and Centennial at 0-4-0.

The quarter-finals are to go Monday and Tuesday and feature Pool A teams against Pool B teams.

Pool B’s final standings will be decided with Friday’s Westside-Wellington Heights match.

Olivia Sarabura had two tries and three converts for Ross while Michelle Hopkins, Courtney Ing and Kennedy Queen each scored two tries. Anna Bernardi had three converts and Cassidy Gordon also scored a try.
