Falcons secure a finish atop girls’ hockey loop

GUELPH – The defending OFSAA AAA high school girls’ hockey champion Centre Wellington Falcons clinched a first-place finish in the District 10 league Tuesday with an 11-0 victory over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels at Exhibition arena.

Tiana Dietrich and Olivia MacMillan each had three goals for the Falcons while Ella Chase and Sydney Healey had two goals apiece. Identity of the other scorer was not reported.

The win leaves the league-leading Falcons at 10-0-1-0 with one game to go in their regular season and they’ve outscored their opponents 81-8.

The runner-up Ross Royals (8-1-1-0) have two games to play and can finish in a tie with Centre Wellington. However, the Falcons will win the tie-breaker thanks to a 4-1 win over the Royals Jan. 9. The teams tied their other meeting 3-3 Dec. 5.

League playoffs are to begin Feb. 19.
