Falcons take two on opening day of OFSAA tourney

MIDLAND – The Centre Wellington Falcons opened the OFSAA provincial high school girls’ AAA championship tournament with a pair of wins Wednesday.

The 10th-seed Falcons edged the fifth-seed Bishop Tonnos Titans of Ancaster 3-2 in their opener before defeating third-seed St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs of Aurora 3-1 in their second game.

Scoring details were not reported.

The Falcons are to complete preliminary round-robin pool play with a game against 16th-seed St. Peter’s Panthers of Barrie Thursday at 8 a.m. in Penetang.

Other teams that scored two wins Wednesday were the top-seed Medway Cowboys of Arva, fourth-seed St. Peter’s Saints of Peterborough, seventh-seed Lawrence Park Panthers of Toronto and eighth-seed Our Lady of Mount Carmel Lions of Mississauga.

Top two in each of the tournament’s four pools advance to the quarter-finals set for Thursday at 12:25 and 12:40 p.m.

Quarter-final winners gain berths in Friday’s 9 a.m. semifinals.

Semifinal winners are to move on to the gold-medal game Friday at 1:30 p.m. while semifinal losers are to play in the bronze-medal match at 12:45 p.m.
