Fast start by Hamilton sinks Hespeler Shamrocks

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded four goals in the opening period as they fell 7-1 to the Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues Saturday night in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Hamilton led 4-0 at the end of the first period before the teams scored once apiece in the second. Hamilton added two power-play goals in the third period of the chippy game.

Austin Slaney had an unassisted shorthanded goal for Hespeler in the opening minute of the second period.

Chris Cudek tallied twice for Hamilton while single goals were netted by Stephen Bell, Brandon Waterhouse, Jeff McDonough, Brady Bannon and Patrick Vulgan. Carter Franks and Vulgan each had two assists and Aidan Robitaille, Bill Stewart, Jamieson Buck, Alex Campbell and Bannon had one each.

Hamilton outshot Hespeler 55-41 and went 2-for-10 on its power play while the Shamrocks were scoreless on seven power plays.

Connor Ogg collected the win in net for Hamilton with 40 saves and Hespeler’s Gavin McLeod had 48 saves.

The Shamrocks trail in the Bloomfield Division at 4-18-1-1 while Hamilton is tied for third at 12-11-1-1.

Hespeler is to play the Dunnville Mudcats for the third time in six games when they’re to meet Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
