Fast start by Sarnia stings Guelph Storm

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm yielded four goals in the first period as they fell 5-3 to the Sarnia Sting in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday at the Sleeman Centre.

Sarnia scored twice before the game was six minutes old and added another pair in the final 6:02 of the period including the eventual game-winner with one second to play in the period.

After getting their first goal midway through the opening period, the Storm cut the gap to a single goal with a pair of goals around four and a half minutes apart in the first half of the third period, but Sarnia tallied 54 seconds after Guelph’s third goal of the game to complete the scoring.

Ben McFarlane, Matthew Papais and Daniil Chayka scored for the Storm while assists went to Jack Harper, Danny Zhilkin and Michael Buchinger.

Theo Hill had a pair of goals for Sarnia while single goals were netted by Nolan Burke, Nolan Dann and Ty Voit. Nolan DeGurse collected two assists while Angus MacDonell, Dann, Voit, Nolan Dillingham and Burke each had one.

The Storm outshot the Sting 39-22 and neither team had a power-play goal. The Storm had two power plays and Sarnia had one.

Jacob Oster had 17 saves in the Guelph net while Anson Thornton had 36 for Sarnia.

The Storm are to host the Saginaw Spirit Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and play the London Knights at London’s Budweiser Gardens Saturday at 4 p.m.
