Fast start takes 81’s to win over Lucknow

LUCKNOW – The Mapleton-Minto 81’s struck for three goals in the first period on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Lucknow Lancers in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior AA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Lucknow arena.

The 81’s led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second. They added another goal early in the third period before Lucknow closed the gap to its final two-goal margin with a pair of goals 31 seconds apart in the final five minutes of the game.

Riley O’Connell had a pair of goals for M-M while single goals were added by Tommy Hoogaars, Kyle Ellis, Austin Gaboury and Brody Lemay. Brady Anderson assisted on four of the goals while single assists were awarded to O’Connell, Collin Hartwick, Mike Pleon, Hoogaars, Devin Williams, Shayne Ross and Gavin Apperson.

Marc Williams picked up the win in the M-M net.

Ben Gowing, Cole MacPherson, Tanner Simpson and Jordan Bell each scored for Lucknow.

The 81’s are tied for sixth at 10-7-2-1 while Lucknow is 13th at 2-18-0-0.

M-M is to finish its regular season with a pair of home games next weekend. The 81’s are to host the 10th-place Tillsonburg Thunder (10-9-0-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Palmerston arena and the 11th-place Elora Rocks (9-10-1-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.
