Fast starts propels Gryphon hoops women to win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons got off to a fast start on their way to a 79-65 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA women’s basketball play Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs scored the first 12 points of the game and led 28-13 at the end of the first quarter. They stretched the lead to 42-31 by halftime before the teams scored 19 points apiece in the third quarter.

Lakehead did get the gap down to eight points in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get any closer.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 22 points while MacKeely Shantz and Ivana Vujadinovic each had 12 and Skyla Minaker netted 10. Minaker and Bechard each had seven rebounds while Minaker had nine assists and Bechard had five steals.

Sofia Lluch had 18 points to lead Lakehead while Tiffany Reynolds collected 15 and Nikki Ylagan added 10. Lily Gruber-Schulz had eight rebounds and Ylagan had seven assists and four steals.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 8-5 and Lakehead at 2-10.
