Fergus Thistles claim another win over Brantford

BRANTFORD – Four power-play goals in the third period sparked the Fergus Thistles to a 10-8 victory over the Brantford Warriors in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Friday night at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex.

The win was the second of the season for the Thistles, both over Brantford.

The Thistles scored six power-play goals in the match, but also yielded four shorthanded goals. The Thistles were helped by Brantford’s Owen Robertson took two major penalties – one for boarding, the other for face-masking – with 11:14 to go in the third.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before the Thistles shot ahead 6-4 by the end of the second. They led 7-6 with nine minutes to play and extended that lead with three consecutive goals.

Tye Sanderson had a hat trick for Fergus while Aiden McDougall netted a pair of goals. Single goals were scored by Brodie Rice, Rory Peters, Cooper Fleet, Jarrett Lavigne and Evan McDougall. The McDougalls, Aiden and Evan, had four assists apiece while Logan Joyes and Conner Schmidt each had two assists. Sanderson, Fleet and Josh Peters each had one assist.

Noah Cupples had three goals and two assists for Brantford while Mitchell Page had two goals and two assists. Rowan Edwards, Krystof Adamiec and Ethan Onland each had a goal while Matthew Travassos had two assists and Walker Zabransy, Adamiec and Alex Long each had one assist.

Brantford outshot Fergus 33-27.

Ethan Bratton had 25 saves for the Thistles while Jonas Zonnenveld had 17 for Brantford.

Wilmot Wild lead the Western Conference at 8-0-0 and are followed by the Six Nations Stealth (6-2-0), Barrie Bombers (5-4-0), Brantford (3-5-0), Orangeville Northmen (3-6-0), Fergus (2-6-0) and Halton Hills Bulldogs (2-6-0).

Next game for the Thistles is June 3 when they’re to host Halton Hills at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex. Game time is 3 p.m.
