Fergus Thistles complete their sweep of Brantford

An eight-goal second period helped the Fergus Thistles complete a three-game sweep of the Brantford Warriors in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff action Thursday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The outburst broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Thistles to a 15-4 victory in Game 3 of the West Division quarter-final series.

Cooper Fleet had a hat trick for the Thistles while Aiden McDougall, Brock Reinhart and Jared Bettonvil scored twice apiece. Single goals were added by Curtis Dietrich, Hudson Karn, Kaiden Patterson, Logan Joyes, Brodie Rice and Tye Sanderson while Bettonvil had six assists. McDougall had four assists while Patterson and Reinhart had three apiece, Dietrich, Joyes and Sanderson had two each and single assists were awarded to Karn, Blake Harrison and Fraser Clark.

Braedon Mair had two goals for Brantford while Keegan Jackson and Krystof Adamec scored once each.

The Warriors outshot the Thistles 47-46 and had a power-play goal while Fergus had three power-play goals and a shorthanded tally.

Carter Billings had 43 saves for Fergus while Ondrej Hajek had 10 in the first 25:40 of the game for Brantford and Jack Forbes had 21 the remainder of the way.

The Thistles, who finished the regular season in fourth place in the Western Conference at 8-8-0-2 (W-L-T-OTL) are to play either the first-place Barrie Bombers (14-2-2-0) or second-place Orangeville Northmen (13-2-3-0) in the conference semifinals. Both received byes in the opening round.

Fergus’s opponent will depend on the winner of the conference quarter-final between the third-place Wilmot Wild (10-7-1-0) and sixth-place Six Nations Stealth (5-13-0-0). Six Nations leads that series 2-1 with Game 4 set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hagersville.

If Game 5 is needed, it’s to go Sunday at 8 p.m. at Plattsville.
