Fergus Thistles drop Brantford to open West final
BRANTFORD – The Fergus Thistles struck for the first three goals of the game and were never headed as they took the opening game of the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League’s West Division final 10-6 over the Brantford Warriors Wednesday night at the Gretzky sports complex.
The Thistles led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second.
Fergus scored their two first-period goals in the game’s first 11 minutes with the goals coming five minutes apart. They added their third goal in the first minute of the second period and led 6-2 with four minutes to go in the second. In the third, the Thistles extended their lead to 8-3 before the period was six minutes old.
Nick Aitchison hit for four goals for the Thistles while Sam MacDonald and J.J. Swanston each scored twice. Single goals were added by Carter Hyndman and Adam Lantz while Hyndman had four assists, Cameron Angst had three, MacDonald and Swanston had two each and Lantz, Brodie Schafer, Jake Bauman, Alec Beaurogard and Aitchison had one apiece.
Caleb Wells collected two goals for Brantford while the others were netted by Michael Comeau, Quinn Drysdale, Nick D’Amico and Dalton Thomas. Trevor McDonald assisted on three of the goals while Comeau set up two and Ryan Dorr, Thomas and Connor Merritt each had one assist.
Brantford outshot the Thistles 44-31, but was scoreless on three power plays while Fergus went 2-for-8 with a manpower advantage.
Xavier DeMichele made 38 saves to get the win in the Fergus net while Jacob Moir had 21 saves for Brantford.
Second game of the best-of-five series is set for Friday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex. Game time is 8 p.m.
