Fergus Thistles drop divisional semifinal opener to Wilmot
BADEN – A slow start proved costly for the Fergus Thistles as they dropped the opening game of their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League West Division semifinal series 11-7 to the Wilmot Wild Sunday at the Wilmot arena.
The Thistles trailed 7-1 midway through the game before getting their scoring touch. They had been behind 4-1 at the end of the first period and they trailed 7-5 at the end of the second.
Fergus scored the first goal of the third period, but wouldn’t pull even as Wilmot netted three in a row to secure the win.
Cameron Angst connected for three goals and three assists for the Thistles while Nick Aitchison scored twice and Jabe Verbeek and Brodie Schafer added single goals. Adam Lantz had three assists while Schafer, Verbeek and J.J. Swanston each had two and Sam MacDonald and Aitchison had one each.
The Wild received two goals apiece from Blake Wideman, Derek Jensen, Matt Wyman, Ethan Warden and Kent Radbourne while Colten Besse scored the other goal. Wideman gathered four assists while Wyman, Besse, Hayden Berger and Jensen had two each. Single assists were awarded to Cody Hudson, Warden, Braydon Hahn, goalie Reyd Fitton and Jordan Hawthorne.
Shots on goal were not reported.
Fergus went 2-for-6 on the power play while Wilmot went 1-for-9.
Xavier DeMichelle started in the Thistles net, but was relieved by Tyson Reeves at 12:56 of the first after Wilmot’s first goal. Reeves was charged with the loss as he surrendered seven goals.
Fitton went the distance in net for Wilmot to pick up the win.
Second game of the best-of-five series is set for Monday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus. Game time is 8 p.m.
Wilmot had finished the regular season in second place in the West Division at 12-4-0. The Wild was two points up on the third-place Thistles (11-5-0).
The teams played three times during the regular season with the Wild winning 10-7 in Fergus May 16, the Thistles winning 11-5 in Baden May 26 and the Wild securing second in the division with an 8-7 win on their home floor June 23.
