Fergus Thistles edged as Brantford squares West final
FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles fell behind early and never caught up as they were edged 6-5 by the Brantford Warriors in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff action Friday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
The result ties the best-of-five West Division at a win apiece and assures the Thistles of at least one more home game this season.
Brantford scored twice in the first 10 minutes and led 2-1 at the end of the opening period. The Warriors extended that lead with two goals in the first three minutes of the second before the Thistles battled back to cut the gap to a single goal (5-4) at the end of the period.
The Thistles received goals from Carter Hyndman, Jacob Hayne, Cameron Angst, Brodie Schafer and Nick Aitchison while Hyndman had two assists and Jacob Ristov, McCaiden Dixon, J.J. Swanston, Jeremy Goodwin, Aitchison and Angst had one apiece.
Jayden Drage had a hat trick for Brantford and Dalton Thomas, Caleb Wells and Connor Merritt scored once each. Trevor McDonald and Michael Comeau each had three assists while Wells, Merritt, Thomas, Ryan Dorr and Andrew Varadenbus each had one.
Brantford outshot the Thistles 43-29 and were scoreless on four power plays while Fergus went 1-for-9 on its power play. Through the first two games of the divisional final, the Thistles have been outshot 87-60, have gone 3-for-17 on their power play and have held Brantford scoreless on seven power plays.
Game 3 of the series is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. at Brantford’s Gretzky sports complex while Game 4 is to go Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Fergus.
