Fergus Thistles hit early to crush Halton Hills Bulldogs

GEORGETOWN – The Fergus Thistles fired home the first five goals of the game to get a good start on the way to a 20-8 victory over the Halton Hills Bulldogs in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League play Monday night at the Mold-Masters Sportsplex.

The win avenged a 10-9 loss to the Bulldogs at Georgetown May 2, although they had also defeated Halton Hills 17-3 at Fergus May 20.

The Thistles led 5-2 at the end of the first period and 13-6 after the second. They had a five-goal spree in the second and another five-goal outburst in the third.

Keegan Detweiler connected for six goals for Fergus while J.J. Swanston had a hat trick. Getting two goals apiece were Garret Warnaar, Curtis Dietrich and Jon-James Lavigne while Brock Redwood, Owen Tovell, Connor Willmets, Cole Doherty and Ewan Mackie added single goals. Swanston assisted on 10 of the goals while Warnaar had four assists, Detweiler, Dietrich, Redwood and Brock Reinhart had three apiece, Lavigne and Kaiden Patterson had two each and Tovell, Willmets and Doherty had one each.

Caiden Merritt tallied twice for Halton Hills while single goals were scored by Braedyn Cyr, Gabe Rowsell, Matthew Nunnero, Rory Campbell, Noah Kearney and Jordan Caruso.

The Thistles went 3-for-7 on their power play while the Bulldogs went 2-for-4.

Shots on goal were not reported.

Ethan Bratton was in net for the win for Fergus while Logan Santori and Liam Noonan split the goaltending chores for Halton Hills. Noonan surrendered nine goals and Santori yielded 11.

The Thistles are second in the seven-team West Division at 10-2-0 while Halton Hills is seventh at 2-12-0.

Fergus has six games to go in its regular season including a pair at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex this weekend as the Thistles are to host the Wilmot Wild Friday at 8 p.m. and the Brantford Warriors Sunday at 8 p.m.
