Fergus Thistles pull away in third to drop Brantford

BRANTFORD – The Fergus Thistles broke open a close game with five unanswered goals in the third period to drop the Brantford Warriors 8-2 in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff action Sunday at the Brantford and District Civic Centre.

The win gives the Thistles a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five West Division semifinal.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Fergus led 3-2 after the second.

J.J. Swanston struck for a hat trick for the Thistles while Jon-James Lavigne had a pair of goals. Getting one goal apiece were Carter Coffey, Garret Warnaar and Aiden McDougall. Curtis Dietrich had three assists while Swanston, Lavigne and Kaiden Patterson had two apiece and Coffey and Owen Tovell had one each.

Justin Brennecke and Matthew Travassos had the goals for Brantford.

The Thistles outshot the Warriors 46-40 and they had three power-play goals, all in the third period.

Ethan Bratton turned aside 38 shots in the Fergus net to get the win while Brantford’s Trystan Williams had 35 saves and Jonas Zoneveld had three.

Third game of the series is slated for Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus.
