Fergus Thistles score first seven in victory over Barrie

ARTHUR – The Fergus Thistles got out of the blocks in a hurry as they scored seven consecutive goals to start their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game with the Barrie Bombers Friday night in a ‘home’ game at the Arthur arena.

That start propelled the Thistles to a 13-4 victory.

The Thistles led 7-0 at the end of the first period and 9-3 after the second.

Carter Coffey struck for four goals for Fergus while Jon-James Lavigne had a hat trick and Aiden McDougall tallied twice. Single goals were netted by Keegan Detweiler, Brock Reinhart, J.J. Swanston and Garret Warnaar. Detweiler had six assists while Coffey and Reinhart had three apiece. Lavigne and Swanston had two each while single assists were awarded to McDougall, Warnaar, Kaiden Patterson, Ewan Mackie, Aiden Cormack and Owen Tovell.

Chase Hughes had two goals for Barrie while Cody Callow and Luke Wensing scored once each.

The Thistles outshot Barrie 43-31 thanks to a 17-8 advantage in the third period. Both teams operated at 50 percent on their power plays as Fergus went 5-for-10 and Barrie went 3-for-6.

Tyson Reeves made 27 saves to get the win in the Fergus net while Barrie’s Caiden Knight and Kalib Anglin Ramm shared the goaltending chores for the Bombers. Ramm had seven saves in the first period while Knight had 23 in the second and third periods combined.

Fergus leads the West Division at 15-2-0 and have won eight games in a row while Barrie is sixth at 3-14-0.

The Thistles are to complete their regular season with a game against the fifth-place Six Nations Stealth (5-11-0) Sunday at Hagersville.

The Orangeville Northmen are second at 14-2-0 with two games to go as the Northmen are to host the fourth-place Brantford Warriors (8-9-0) Saturday and play the third-place Wilmot Wild (11-6-0) at Wilmot Sunday.

The Thistles and Northmen could finish in a tie for first place in the conference. As the teams split their matches, both winning by 10-8 scores, any tie will be broken by a team’s goal differential between goals scored and goals allowed. The Thistles have scored 105 goals more than they’ve given up while the Northmen have netted 67 more than they’ve given up.

Game time of Sunday’s match between the Thistles and Six Nations is 2 p.m.
