Fergus Thistles start season with loss to Barrie

BARRIE – The Fergus Thistles yielded three consecutive goals to both open and close their Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season opener Saturday night against the Barrie Bombers at Barrie’s Holly Community Centre.

Those goals helped Barrie post a 13-7 victory.

The hosts led 4-1 at the end of the first period and 7-4 after the second, three straight goals by Fergus in the final six minutes of the middle frame allowed the Thistles to close the gap a little.

The gap was down to two goals at 8-6 with just under 13 minutes to play, but the Bombers outscored the Thistles 5-1 the rest of the way.

Tye Sanderson, Blake Harrison and Evan McDougall fired home two goals apiece for Fergus while a single goal was added by Jarrett Lavigne. Aiden McDougall had three assists while Cameron Pelkie, Connor Schmidt, Cooper Fleet and Evan McDougall each had two and Logan Joyes had one.

Bo Bitzer, Carter Barrie and Andrew Dafoe had hat tricks for Barrie while Cameron MacKinnon tallied twice and Myles Shorey and Cody Callow scored once each. Luke Wensing set up three goals while Jacob McFadden, Shorey, Chase Hughes and Dafoe each had two assists. Getting one assist apiece were Hunter Bricknell, Bitzer and MacKinnon.

The Bombers outshot the Thistles 45-23 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Fergus went 3-for-5.

Ethan Bratton had 32 saves for the Thistles while Caden Knight had 16 for Barrie.

While the game was the season opener for the Thistles, it was the second win in as many outings for the Bombers.

The Thistles are to play the Wilmot Wild at the Plattsville Arena in Wilmot’s season opener Sunday at 4 p.m.
