Fergus Thistles top Brantford to open playoffs

The Fergus Thistles had an eight-goal run in the second period as they opened the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoffs with a 17-7 victory over the Brantford Warriors Friday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Thistles struck for those eight consecutive goals in a span of eight minutes and 43 seconds as they expanded a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first period into a 12-5 lead by the end of the second.

Evan McDougall struck for six goals for the Thistles while Kaiden Patterson had a hat trick and Curtis Dietrich added a pair of goals. Single markers were netted by Aiden McDougall, Brodie Rice, Jared Bettonvil, Cooper Fleet, Tye Sanderson and Griffin Mackie. Logan Joyes collected four assists while Aiden McDougall, Bettonvil and Fleet each had three, Patterson and Blake Harrison had two each and Dietrich, Nate Long, Aiden Cormack, Evan McDougall and Mackie each had one.

Krystof Adamec had a hat trick for Brantford while Keegan Jackson, Trent Schertzing, Braedon Mair and Sam Cino each netted a single goal.

The Thistles outshot Brantford 17-7 and scored three power-play goals and a shorthanded tally. The Warriors had a power-play goal and three shorthanded goals.

Carter Billings had 24 saves for Fergus and Ondrej Hajek had 47 for Brantford.

Fergus had finished fourth in the Western Conference at 8-8-0-2 (W-L-T-OTL) while Brantford was fifth at 7-9-1-1.

The Thistles and Warriors met three times during the regular season with Brantford winning two of the games as the Warriors prevailed 12-9 at Brantford June 23 and 10-8 at Fergus May 26 while the Thistles won 13-6 at Fergus May 10.
