Fergus Thistles top Wilmot to stay alive in West semifinal

BADEN – A pair of scoring outbursts by the Fergus Thistles Thursday night at the Wilmot Recreation Complex allowed the Thistles to be able to play another day this Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League season.

The Thistles scored four consecutive goals in the first period and netted five in a row later in the game on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Wilmot Wild in West Division semifinal play.

Wilmot leads the best-of-five series 2-1.

The Wild scored twice in the first two and a half minutes of the game, but the Thistles rallied with four in a row, including a natural hat trick by Nick Aitchison, to be up 4-2 at the end of the opening period.

Wilmot scored three in a row to regain the lead at 5-4 before the second stanza was eight minutes old, but Fergus started its five-goal run with a trio of goals in 71 seconds later in the second to claim a 7-5 lead by the end of the period.

The Thistles added to their lead with two goals in the first four minutes of the third before Wilmot hit for its lone goal of the period. However, the Thistles tallied one more time after that to complete the scoring in the game.

Aitchison led the Fergus scoring with his first-period hat trick while Cameron Angst, Adam Lantz and Sam MacDonald each scored twice and Brodie Schafer added the other goal. Carter Hyndman and Alec Beaurogard each had three assists while Schafer and Lantz had two each and J.J. Swanston, MacDonald, Brodie Rice, Angst, Aitchison, Jeremy Goodwin and Jake Bauman had one apiece.

Blake Wideman scored twice for Wilmot while single goals were netted by Kent Radbourne, Ethan Warden, Todd Thomas and Derek Jensen. Warden, Dylan Kuntz and Tyler Nagy each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Matt Wyman, Braydon Hahn, Radbourne and Cody Hudson.

The Wild outshot the Thistles 49-43 while Fergus went 2-for-4 on its power play and Wilmot went 1-for-6.

Xavier DeMichelle made 43 saves to get the win in the Thistles net while Reyd Fitton had 33 saves for Wilmot.

Fourth game of the series is set for Friday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

If Fergus wins that one, Game 5 is to be played Sunday at 3 p.m. at Baden.

Winner of the series will play the Brantford Warriors in the best-of-five West Division final. Brantford defeated the Barrie Bombers 13-11 Thursday night at Barrie to wrap up a 3-1 series win in the other West semifinal.
