Fergus Thistles, Wilmot take West semifinal to the max
FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles and Wilmot Wild are headed for a one-game showdown to decide who’ll face the Brantford Warriors in the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League’s West Division final.
The Thistles scored five times in the second period Friday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex to drop Wilmot 9-4 and tie the best-of-five division semifinal at two wins apiece.
The fifth and deciding game is to be played at the Wilmot Recreation Complex in Baden Sunday.
The Thistles scored four consecutive goals in the second period Friday to break a 2-2 tie. The hosts had led 2-1 at the end of the opening period and were up 7-3 after the second.
Cameron Angst paced the Thistles with a hat trick while single goals were added by Brodie Schafer, Jacob Hayne, Jacob Ristov, Adam Lantz, Carter Hyndman and Nick Aitchison. Lantz, Aitchison, McCaiden Dixon and Angst each had two assists while J.J. Swanston, Jake Bauman, Hayne, Brodie Rice, Schafer, Alec Beaurogard and Hyndman had one each.
Tyler Townsend, Blake Wideman, Todd Thomas and Ethan Warden scored for Wilmot while Kent Radbourne had two assists and single assists were awarded to Matt Wyman, Colten Besse, Warden and Tyler Nagy.
The teams took each 41 shots and Fergus went 1-for-6 on its power play while Wilmot never had a man-advantage situation in the game.
Xavier DeMichele had 37 saves to get the win in the Fergus net while Reyd Fitton took the loss for Wilmot. He had 21 saves in the first two periods and Mike Martin-Abel had 11 saves in the third.
Game time Sunday is 3 p.m.
Brantford completed a 3-1 series win over the Barrie Bombers Thursday night.
In the regular season, Brantford won two of three matches with both the Thistles and Wilmot.
