Field hockey Gryphons leave Western behind

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for six goals in the second half as they clobbered the Western Mustangs 7-0 in OUA women’s field hockey play Wednesday at Varsity Field.

The second-half scoring outburst included three goals scored in a span of five minutes midway through the half.

Olivia Finch had scored the only goal of the opening half while Danielle Crumpton (with two), Kayla Magarelli, Rudi Ballard, Katherine MacMillan and Rebecca Plouffe scored in the second half.

The Gryphs are third in the standings at 5-2-1. York Lions lead at 7-0-2 and Toronto Varsity Blues are second at 7-1-1 while Western is sixth at 1-4-1.

Guelph and Western are to play again Oct. 13 at Toronto. The Gryphs are also to play the fourth-place Queen’s Gaels (2-5-0) at Toronto that day.
