Field hockey Gryphs face Western in quarter-finals

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons are to begin their quest for the OUA women’s field hockey title with a quarter-final match against the Western Mustangs Friday.

This year’s OUA championship will be decided at Waterloo’s Warrior Field.

The tournament starts with Friday’s quarter-finals while the semifinals are set for Saturday and the final for Sunday.

The defending champion York Lions finished atop the league at the end of the regular season with a 10-0-2 record. They were followed by the Toronto Varsity Blues (10-1-1), the Gryphons (7-3-2), Queen’s Gaels (5-5-2), Waterloo Warriors (3-7-2), Western (2-9-1) and McGill Martlets (0-12-0).

The Gryphs dropped Western in both regular-season meetings as they won 7-0 Oct. 3 and 6-1 10 days later.

Friday’s other quarter-finals has York playing the McMaster Marauders who didn’t participate in the regular season, Toronto playing McGill and Queen’s playing Waterloo.

The Gryphs are to play Western at 11 a.m.
