Field hockey Gryphs pummel Western to start season
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons scored five goals in the first quarter as they opened their OUA women’s field hockey campaign with an 8-1 win over the Western Mustangs Sunday at York University’s Alumni Field.
The Gryphs led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter before adding another goal in the second quarter and two more in the third. Western’s lone goal came with less than three minutes to go in the game.
Katherine MacMillan sparked the Gryphs with a four-goal outing while Kayla Magarelli scored twice and Bailey Mitchell and Sidney Evans netted single goals.
Celli Randal scored the lone goal for Western.
There were no assists awarded during the game.
Amanda Hodgert picked up the win in net for Guelph while Emily Davis was in net for Western.
The Gryphs are to play three games at Kingston next weekend as they’re to battle the McGill Martlets (0-2) and Queen’s Gaels (1-0) Saturday and York Lions (1-0) Sunday.
