Field hockey Gryphs use third quarter to corral Mustangs
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons scored three times in the third quarter to rally for a 4-2 victory over the Western Mustangs in OUA women’s field hockey play Sunday at York University’s Alumni Field.
Western opened the scoring in the first quarter before the Gryphs tied it two minutes later. The locals shot ahead with their trio of goals in the third quarter and Western completed the scoring with the lone goal of the fourth quarter.
Sidney Evans had a pair of goals for Guelph while Mackenzie Janzen and Alexa Corrado added single goals.
Madison Fisher and Kuljit Sahota tallied for Western.
Maryam Maamoun picked up the win in the Guelph net while Sarah Hunter took the loss in net for Western.
The win leaves the Gryphs third in the seven-team league at 4-1-1 while Western is sixth at 1-5-0. Toronto Varsity Blues lead at 6-0-1 and the York Lions are second at 5-1-0.
The Gryphs have a pair of games at Toronto this weekend as they’re to battle the Waterloo Warriors (2-3-0) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and the Queen’s Gaels (2-3-0) Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
