First-half goal gives win to Gryphon soccer women

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons connected for the game’s only goal late in the first half as they edged the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 in OUA women’s soccer play on Guelph’s Soccer Alumni Day Friday night at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.

Sydney VanderHoef struck on a penalty kick in the 36th minute for the game’s lone goal.

Keira Doetzel made six saves to get the clean sheet in net for the Gryphs.

The locals outshot Laurier 10-8 thanks to a 4-2 advantage in the second half.

The Gryphs were also called for six of the game’s nine fouls.

Guelph is third in the West Division with a 3-1-0 record while the York Lions and Western Mustangs are tied for first with identical 3-0-1 marks. Laurier’s at 2-3-0.

The Gryphs and Golden Hawks are to play again Sunday at Laurier starting at 1 p.m.
