First-half goal lifts Gryphon soccer women to victory
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons used a first-half goal to slip by the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 in OUA women’s soccer league play Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Kate Knafelc scored the game’s only goal around the 34-minute mark.
Brooke Davidson picked up the shutout.
The game involving the teams that had battled to a scoreless tie at Waterloo early in the month was a close one throughout as shots and scoring chances were few.
Laurier outshot the Gryphs 5-4 and both teams had two shots miss the mark. Both took two corner kicks and both also picked up one yellow card apiece.
The win extended Guelph’s undefeated streak in regular-season home games to 14. They haven’t lost at home since being handed a 5-2 setback by the Western Mustangs Oct. 21, 2017.
Guelph is second in the West Division at 6-1-1 while Laurier is eighth at 1-5-1. Western leads at 7-0-2 while the Waterloo Warriors are third at 3-2-3.
The Gryphs are to host the fifth-place York Lions (2-1-3) Sunday at 1 p.m.
