First loss of season for Gryphon rugby men

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first setback of the OUA men’s rugby season when they were handed a 21-10 defeat by the Queen’s Gaels Friday night at Varsity Field.

While the Gryphs never led in the game, the teams did trade scores throughout the game with a try by the Gaels 12 minutes into the second half putting Queen’s ahead for good.

Colin Lynch had a try for the Gryphs in the first half, converted by Aria Keshoofy.

Keshoofy added Guelph’s other points on a penalty kick in the second half, five minutes after the go-ahead try by the visitors.

Ruairidh MacPhail, Stephen Zuliani and Trevor Aelgason each had a try for the Gaels while Connor Jacques converted all three.

The loss leaves the Gryphs at 2-1 while Queen’s improves to 2-0.

The Gryphs are to play the Trent Excalibur (1-1) at Peterborough Friday at 7 p.m.
