First-period goal sparks Ross to win by single-goal margin
GUELPH – A goal midway through the first period proved to be the difference in the game as the Ross Royals scored a 3-2 victory over the Centre Wellington Falcons in District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey play Friday at the Victoria Road arena.
Ayden McNaughton’s goal for the Royals was the lone goal of the opening period while the teams scored twice apiece in the second before a scoreless third in the wide-open match.
The loss was the first of the season for Centre Wellington.
Mitch Penner and Adam Nightingale tallied in the second for Ross while Noah Van Dam had two assists and Nick Garcia had one.
Jack McDonald and Aidan Mead scored for the Falcons while assists went to Zac Tofflemire, Brett Harrison, Jarrett Anderson and Brady Couling.
Tyler Chalifour picked up the win in net for Ross while Isaiah Bennett was in goal for Centre Wellington.
The game was the second in as many days for the Falcons who had doubled the Centennial Spartans 6-3 at Centennial arena Thursday.
Mark McIntosh, Couling, Cole Bauman, Mead, Owen Williams and Aiden Skerrit scored against the Spartans while Aiden Battaglia had three assists and Couling, Mead, Skerrit, Zack Ranahan, Ethan Meyer and Anderson each had one assists.
Scoring for Centennial were Robertson, Tyler Beecraft and Mielen while assists went to E. Kilmurry, Michael, Bangart, B. Kilmurry, Saghir and Qalib Ladhani.
Centre Wellington leads the league at 3-1-0 while the Norwell Varsity Reds are the lone unbeaten team at 2-0-0. Ross is at 2-1-0 while the Centre Dufferin Royals, Wellington Heights Wolverines and Orangeville Bears are each at 1-1-0. Guelph CVI Green Gaels follow at 0-2-0 and Centennial is at 0-3-0.
League play resumes Tuesday with Centennial playing GCVI at the West End arena at 4 p.m.
