First-period goals lift Gryphon hockey men to win

WATERLOO – A pair of goals in the first period proved to be the difference as the Guelph Gryphons handed the Waterloo Warriors a 3-1 setback in OUA men’s hockey play at the Columbia Ice Fields arena Saturday.

The opening-period goals for the Gryphs staked them to a 2-0 lead until the Warriors hit for their lone goal of the game at 7:15 of the third. The Gryphs got that one back with 39 seconds to go in the game to complete the scoring.

Ethan Doyle, Ted McGeen and Giordano Biondi had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Emmett Gordon, Duncan Penman, Nolan DeGurse, Jacob Winterton and Doyle.

Alex Gritz had the goal for Waterloo while Jacob Cascagnette and Jack Phibbs had assists on the goal.

Waterloo outshot the Gryphs 22-21, but were scoreless on four power plays while the Gryphs went 1-for-4.

Tanner Wickware had 20 saves for Guelph while Dan Murphy had 18 for the Warriors.

The Gryphs are to complete their first semester and their 3-in-3 weekend Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against the Brock Badgers at Brock’s Canada Games arena.
