First-time champion to be crowned in girls’ rugby
GUELPH – There’ll be a Royals squad in the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby final Thursday in Fergus, but it won’t be the one that had made a habit of being there prior to the pandemic.
The Ross Royals, winners of five consecutive league titles prior to the pandemic and seven league honors in the nine years before COVID struck, were ousted from the playoffs Monday with a 24-7 loss to the Erin Raiders at Erin.
The Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne will be in the final as they surprised the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 29-5 in the other semifinal Monday at the U of G’s Varsity Field.
Erin (3-0-0) and Centre Dufferin (2-1-0) had finished one-two in Pool A at the completion of the quick regular season. GCVI (3-0-0) and Ross (2-1-0) had finished atop Pool B heading into the crossover semifinals.
How much did two years off due to the pandemic affect high school girls’ rugby? Whoever wins Thursday’s final will be celebrating with the championship plaque for the very first time.
The championship final is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Victoria Park in Fergus.
It is to follow the consolation final which is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
Scores from Monday’s consolation semifinals – Centre Wellington Falcons at Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Centennial Spartans at Orangeville Bears – were not reported.
