Five-goal first powers Fergus Thistles to victory

OAKVILLE – The Fergus Thistles connected for five goals in the first period on their way to a 12-7 victory over the Oakville Buzz in Ontario junior C lacrosse play Friday night at Joshua’s Creek arena.

The Thistles led 5-1 at the end of the first period and 9-6 after the second.

Nick Aitchison had a hat trick for Fergus while Brodie Schafer, Trenton Hitchcock and Cameron Angst added two goals apiece. Scoring once each were Jacob Hayne, Carter Hyndman and Sam MacDonald. Aitchison and Adam Lantz each had four assists while J.J. Swanston had three, Hyndman two and Angst, Jake Bauman, Ryan Biggs, Kurtis Goodwin, Hitchcock and Schafer had one each.

Zack Elliott netted a pair of goals for Oakville while single goals were added by Adam Brown, Owen Coyne, Louis Elia, Cam Shae and Matthew Stone. Marco Middaugh set up three of the goals while Stone picked up two assists and Coyne, Elia, Elliott, Sam Gaskin, goalkeeper Aiden Kelly, Andrew Plummer, Shae and Ethan Stainton each had one.

Shots on net were not reported.

The Thistles went 1-for-4 on their power play and they had two shorthanded goals while Oakville went 2-for-6 on its power play and also had a shorthanded marker.

Xavier DeMichele had the win in net for Fergus while Kelly took the loss.

The Thistles are to host the Caledon Bandits Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
