Five-goal run gives Guelph Storm first win of season

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Storm struck for five consecutive goals to drop the Niagara IceDogs 5-2 to record their first victory of the OHL season Saturday night at the Meridian Centre.

The Storm surrendered the first and last goals of the game, but had a five-goal run that started at 16:30 of the first period and ended at 2:39 of the third. Both of Niagara’s goals came on the power play.

The Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second.

Scoring for the Storm were Sasha Pastujov, Jake Karabela, Valentin Zhugin, Danny Zhilkin and Cam Allen. Michael Buchinger assisted on three of the goals while Matthew Poitras and Braeden Bowman each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Zhilkin, Ryan McGuire and Pastujov.

Rodwin Dionicio and Juan Copeland scored for Niagara while Pano Fimis assisted on both goals. Pasquale Zito and David Jesus each had one assist.

The Storm outshot the IceDogs 45-27 and went 3-for-8 on the power play while Niagara went 2-for-3. The Storm also won 46 faceoffs, twice as many as Niagara.

Jacob Oster collected the win in the Guelph goal. He had 25 saves while Josh Rosenzweig had 40 saves for Niagara.

The result leaves the Storm at 1-2-1-0 and Niagara at 2-3-1-0.

The Storm have their first three-in-three of the season next weekend. They’re to host the Saginaw Spirit (2-2-0-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m., play the Kingston Frontenacs (1-1-0-1) in Kingston Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Ottawa 67’s (4-0-0-0) in Ottawa Sunday at 2 p.m.
