Five national senior champs at Guelph Wrestling Club
MONTREAL – Five members of the Guelph Wrestling Club were crowned Canadian senior champions in their respective freestyle classes Saturday.
Korey Jarvis won the senior men’s 125 kilogram class. The lone member of the local club who’s been nominated to compete in next month’s Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia, the title win was his fifth in six years at the national championships. He also won gold at the Olympic Trials in 2016.
An Elliot Lake native who lives and trains in Guelph, Jarvis was also named the outstanding senior male wrestler of the year. During the year he won gold at the Canada Cup, bronze at the Senior Pan American Championships and was seventh at the senior world championships.
Gunnar Sales prevailed in the national senior men’s 70 kg. class, a class that saw three Guelph wrestlers finish in the top four. Alexander Chaves was second and Cole Michaelis fourth.
Dalton Webb won the senior men’s 92 kg. class.
Chelsey Sicard was crowned champion of the senior women’s 55 kg. class.
Gracelynn Doogan took the senior women’s 76 kg. class title.
Elvir Uzunovic was runner-up in the senior men’s 61 kg. class.
Natassya Lu was the bronze medalist in the senior women’s 50 kg. class.
For Gunnar Sales, the senior title win was his second national championship win in two days as he won the junior men’s 70 kg. freestyle class title Friday. Clubmate Harvir Lall was second.
Garett Sales was runner-up in the junior men’s 65 kg. class.
Hannah Little was bronze medalist in the junior women’s 53 kg. class.
Esmee Hotson placed fourth in the junior women’s 57 kg. class.
Simon Chaves finished fourth in the junior men’s 79 kg. class.
