Flint comes back to edge Storm in overtime
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm squandered a two-goal lead as they were edged 4-3 in overtime by the Flint Firebirds in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The Storm was up 2-0 two minutes into the second period, but needed a goal by Daniil Chayka with 1:46 to go in the third period to force overtime.
The goal was Chayka’s second of the game while Jacob Roach also scored for the Storm. Pavel Gogolev had a pair of assists while Eric Uba, Andrei Bakanov, goaltender Nico Daws and Fedor Gordeev each had one.
Flint’s Riley McCourt hit for the winning goal at 2:56 of overtime. Evgeniy Oksentyuk, Connor Roberts and Jake Durham tallied during regulation time for the Firebirds while assists went to Roberts, Vladislav Kolyachonok, Evan Vierling, Ty Dellandrea, Oksentyuk and former Storm goalie Anthony Popovich.
Flint outshot the Storm 37-23 and both teams went 1-for-4 on their power play.
Daws took the overtime loss for the Storm. He had 33 saves while Popovich picked up the win with 20 saves.
The result leaves the Storm with a record that features one of everything – 1-1-1-1. Flint’s at 4-1-0-0.
The Storm is to play the Sarnia Sting (0-4-0-0) at Sarnia’s Progressive Auto Sales Arena Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
