Flurry of goals lifts Mount Forest Patriots to victory

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots connected for five goals in the second period on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots turned a single-goal lead (3-2) into a five-goal advantage with four goals in a span of four minutes and 45 seconds in the second half of the middle frame. Of those four goals, three were power-play markers.

The Patriots led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 7-2 after the second while Wingham scored the only goal of the third.

Bryan Richardson had a hat trick for Mount Forest while Jared Rowe, Logan Mills, Elijah Brahaney and Riley Torrie also scored. Mills, Ben Tenhag and Caleb Cribbin each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Austin Griffin, Cameron Voisin, Brahaney, Matthew Weiler, Torrie and Jordan Leitch.

Guelph native Matt Tolton had a pair of goals for Wingham while Kyle Stanbury had a goal and two assists. Coleson Fischer also had an assist.

The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 36-29 and went 3-for-5 on their power play while Wingham was 2-for-8 with a manpower advantage.

Vance Meyer picked up the win with 26 saves in net for the Patriots while Garrett Golley and Will Crump shared the goaltending chores for Wingham. Golley had 14 saves in the first 33:29 while Crump had 15 saves the rest of the way.

The Patriots are to play the Goderich Flyers at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
