Football Gryphons slip by Windsor to even their record

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons squared their OUA football record with a 26-20 victory over the Windsor Lancers Saturday at Windsor’s Alumni Field.

The Gryphs jumped ahead early, then held on for the win over winless Windsor.

Guelph led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and 20-3 at halftime before the Lancers cut the gap to 23-10 by the end of the third quarter.

After Gabe Ferraro hit his third field goal of the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, a 21-yarder, to put Guelph up by 16, the Lancers rallied with a 42-yard field goal by Clark Green and a touchdown by Tristan Carter and convert by Green about a minute and a half later.

That, though, was to be the end of the scoring in the game.

Guelph quarterback Theo Landers completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown and he was the leading rusher in the game with 164 yards on 11 carries. His longest rush alone would’ve made him the leading rusher in the game as he had a 91-yard scamper in the second quarter that set up a two-yard TD plunge by Jean-Paul Cimankinda on the following play.

Defensively, linebacker Luke Korol had 14 solo and five assisted tackles in the game. They included three solo tackles after Windsor’s final touchdown of the game.

Guelph’s defence also had eight sacks.

The Lancers has possession of the ball for more than six minutes longer than the Gryphs and they earned seven more first downs.

The Gryphs, Queen’s Gaels and McMaster Marauders are tied at 2-2 while the Western Mustangs lead at 3-0. Waterloo Warriors, Carleton Ravens, Laurier Golden Hawks and Ottawa Gee-Gees are each at 2-1 while the York Lions are at 1-3, Toronto Varsity Blues are at 0-3 and Windsor is at 0-4.

Next on the schedule for the Gryphs is their Homecoming Game against Queen’s. It’s set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
