Force gets a lead, but Shield rallies for win

FERGUS — The South Muskoka Shield scored the final five goals of the game to defeat the Fergus Force 6-2 in Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.

The Force scored a pair of goals 41 seconds apart to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period, but South Muskoka hit for two goals 17 seconds apart midway through the second to lead 3-2 at the end of the period.

It was the first time in their inaugural season that the Force held a lead in a game. They had been tied 3-3 with the Shield early in the second period of a game in Gravenhurst Oct. 6, but never led in that game.

Justin Bryenton and Milan Bango scored for the Force while assists were awarded to Xavier Hindman-Hellyer, Blake Ward, Matthew Bogenrieder and Sean Caruso.

Narcisse Baptiste, Giacomo Nicolodi and Libor Machan each had a goal and two assists for South Muskoka while Dimitri Beer, Karlis Lagzdins and Viktor Urban also scored once each. David Kovar had two assists and Zach White, Ilya Kovgorenya and David Matusek had one each.

South Muskoka outshot the Force 50-37. Kamil Paciga picked up the win for the Shield as he had 35 saves while Maxim Samoilovich had 44 saves for Fergus.

The result left the Force at 1-14-0-0 – their win was by default after the Wiarton Schooners withdrew from the league. South Muskoka improved to 7-10-0-2.

The Force has three consecutive games against the Meaford Knights (9-5-0-3) on their schedule. They’re to play at Meaford Thursday at 7:30 p.m., host the Knights Sunday at 3 p.m. and play at Meaford Nov. 23 in the first game in a stretch of four games in four days.
