Four-goal second period powers Patriots to triumph

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for four goals in the second period in a 5-4 victory over the Kincardine Bulldogs in PJHL play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Mount Forest carried a 5-3 lead into the third.

All six goals scored by the teams in the second period came in a span of 8:10 after the period’s nine-minute mark.

Scoring for the Patriots with a goal apiece were Ben Tenhag, Matthew Weiler, Elijah Brahaney, Dylan Szymanowski and Jordan Leitch. Kyle Detweiler and Leitch each had two assists while Jared Rowe, Cameron Voisin, Tenhag, Conner Page, Brahaney and Szymanowski each had one.

Carter Servais netted a pair of goals for Kincardine while Steven Grant and Cooper Schneider scored once each. Assists went to Kieran Moore, Grant, Servais and Harrison Meulensteen.

The Bulldogs outshot the Patriots 40-26 and both teams scored a single power-play goal, Kincardine on seven power plays and Mount Forest on four.

Vance Meyer had 36 saves for the Patriots. Starter Carter Garvie had 14 saves for Kincardine before being replaced by Christian DeJong after Mount Forest’s fourth goal. DeJong had seven saves.

With five games to go in their regular season, the Patriots lead the Pollock Division at 28-8-0-1. They’re seven points ahead of the Hanover Barons (23-8-2-2) who have two games in hand and nine ahead of the Mitchell Hawks (22-10-2-2) who have a game in hand.

Kincardine is fifth at 17-14-3-1.

The Patriots are to play the seventh-place Walkerton Capitals (4-27-1-1) at the Walkerton Community Centre Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the sixth-place Goderich Flyers (5-29-1-0) Saturday at 8 p.m.
