Four goals in third period secures victory for Elora Rocks

ELORA – The Elora Rocks struck for four goals in the third period to secure an 8-4 victory over the Stratford Fighting Irish Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre to complete their regular-season schedule in the inaugural Western Ontario Super Hockey League season.

The Rocks, who’ll finish atop the standings, outscored Stratford 2-1 in each of the first two periods.

Spencer Maccormack and Brad Krysko hit for two goals apiece for the Rocks while single goals were netted by Klayton Hoelscher, Matteo Condotta, Alex Utley and Tye Campbell. Krysko, Campbell and Spencer Gourlay each had two assists while Trevor Lord, Andrew Whalen, Michael Giacometti, Jeremey Goodwin, Mark Hamilton and Craig Byford each had one.

Matt Martin tallied twice for Stratford while the other goals were scored by Hayden Broomhead and Andrew Bogdon. Colin Martin and Cameron Stokes each had two assists and Ray Robbins, Broomhead and Tanner Johnson each had one.

The Rocks outshot the Irish 34-33 and Stratford didn’t score on the game’s only power play.

Craig Byford turned aside 29 shots to get the win in net for the Rocks while Marc Nother had 26 saves for Stratford.

The Rocks complete the regular season with a 17-3-2-0 record and are eight points ahead of the Strathroy Jets who have one game left to play. Stratford’s fourth at 8-9-0-1 and is a point behind the third-place Tillsonburg Thunder and the teams are to meet Saturday night at Tillsonburg.

Playoffs are expected to begin next week.
