Four Gryphons selected in CFL draft

GUELPH – Four members of the Guelph Gryphons became the latest to be headed to pro football training camps next month when they were selected in Thursday’s night CFL draft.

Offensive lineman Andrew Pickett was taken in the third round, 22nd overall, by the Ottawa RedBlacks. Three picks later the Calgary Stampeders selected defensive back Royce Metchie.

Calgary picked another Gryphon in the seventh round when they took record-setting kicker Gabe Ferraro 59th overall and defensive back Nick Parisotto, a Guelph native and graduate of Lourdes high school, was picked by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the eighth round, 66th overall.

All four vow to increase their training routines to help their bids of making the roster of their respective CFL teams.

Pickett could play on the University of Guelph’s Alumni Stadium field again June 7 when the RedBlacks and Toronto Argonauts play a preseason game there.

Metchie, the fourth defensive back selected in the draft, had 82 solo tackles, 52 assisted tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and two interceptions during his four seasons with the Gryphs. He played in 28 games.

Ferraro was the lone kicker picked in the draft and he joins former Gryphon kicker Rob Maver with the Stampeders. Ferraro was good on a U Sports single-season record 33 field goals last year.

Parisotto had 93 solo tackles, 42 assisted tackles, four fumble recoveries and nine interceptions during his four years with the Gryphs. He also had one kickoff return and 12 punt returns.

With four players selected in the draft, the Gryphon streak of having at least one player picked stretches to six years. That total includes 14 taken in the last four drafts, tied for fourth-best among Canadian universities with the Montreal Carabins. They trail only the Calgary Dinos (28), Laval Rouge et Or (20) and Western Mustangs (17).
