Four Guelph wrestlers pin national title wins

ST. CATHARINES – Four members of the Guelph Wrestling Club captured national titles at last weekend’s Canadian senior and junior championships at Brock University.

Korey Jarvis and Gunnar Sales were double champions while Garrett Sales and Chelsey Sicard each won one title.

Jarvis won the senior men’s 125-kilogram freestyle title and the senior men’s 130 kg. Greco-roman title while Gunnar Sales prevailed in the junior men’s 66 kg. freestyle and Greco-roman classes. Sicard won the senior women’s 60 kg. freestyle crown and Garrett Sales won the title in the junior men’s 60 kg. Greco-roman class.

Jarvis breezed through the freestyle event, winning three one-sided matches for the title. He defeated Bradley Hildenbrandt of Burnaby Mountain 10-0 in the opening round, Frederick Choquette of Montreal 11-0 in the semifinals and Sean Molle of Burnaby Mountain 10-2 in the final.

In the Greco-roman competition, Jarvis defeated Amir Bazrafshan 5-0 in the final.

Sicard was awarded the decision in a close match with Laurence Beauregard of Montreal in the women’s 60 kg. final. They had scored seven points apiece.

Gunnar Sales also took three one-sided victories for his freestyle title. He defeated Ayobami Peluola of Saskatoon 12-1 in the first round, Harvir Lall of Matmen 10-0 in the semifinals and Aidan McKeage of Bears 10-0 in the final.

In his Greco-roman final, Gunnar Sales defeated clubmate Cole Michaelis 10-2.

Garrett Sales won his Greco-roman title in a close battle atop the class. He, Austin Hibbert of Kent and Jobandeep Bhullar of Akhara of Champions each had three wins and a loss. Garrett Sales defeated Hibbert by a fall, but lost 12-3 to Bhullar who lost 13-4 to Hibbert.

Garrett Sales also defeated Brendan McKeage of Cochrane Cowboy 11-9 and Chris Nikolau of London-Western with a fall.

Guelph club members won seven other medals at the national championships.

Dalton Webb won silver in senior men’s 97 kg. freestyle and Garrett Sales won silver in junior men’s 60 kg. freestyle.

Freestyle bronze medals went to Gracelynn Doogan in senior women’s 75 kg., Cole Michaelis in junior men’s 66 kg. and Jake Michaelis in junior men’s 74 kg.

In junior men’s Greco-roman, Simon Chaves won silver at 74 kg. and Jake Michaelis won bronze in the same class.

The Guelph club won the junior men’s Greco-roman team title.

Sicard was fourth in junior women’s 55 kg. freestyle while

Dan Humphrey (senior men’s 74 kg. freestyle) and Hannah Little (junior women’s 55 kg. freestyle) had sixth-place finishes.
