Four-run inning powers Creeks to win in home opener

GUELPH – The Guelph Silvercreeks broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 9-5 victory over the St. Thomas Tomcats in their Inter County Baseball Association 22U home opener Wednesday night at Hastings Stadium.

The game was limited to a single run after the Creeks scored their four-run inning.

The Creeks had jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the first inning, but fell behind when St. Thomas responded with two runs in the second and another one in the top of the third.

Guelph went ahead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third and they added another run in the fourth. The Tomcats got that run back in the top of the fifth before the Creeks got some breathing room with their fifth-inning outburst.

The lone run after the fifth was a single run by the visitors in the eighth.

The Creeks clobbered 11 hits in the game and stranded 11 runners while both teams committed three errors. St. Thomas had five hits and left 14 runners on base.

Jacob McWhirter went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Creeks with a homer and two singles. He scored two runs, knocked in two, was walked once and stole a base.

Alex Camilo and Ryan Kush each had two singles and an RBI. Camilo scored two runs and was walked once while Kush scored a run and stole a base.

Owen Sartor had a single, was walked twice, scored a run and had an RBI while Aiden Mendonza had a single, a walk, a sacrifice fly, a run and an RBI.

The Guelph pitchers in the game included Logan Miziolek (2 innings), Bennett Moore (2 1/3 innings), John Aucoin (1 2/3 innings) and Ethan Malicki (2 innings). Miziolek had five strikeouts and didn’t yield any earned runs while winning pitcher Moore, Aucoin and Malicki each had two strikeouts.

The win was the second in as many league outings for the Creeks while it was the season opener for St. Thomas.

The Creeks are to host the Brantford Junior Red Sox next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
