Four to start, four to end as Patriots down Goderich
GODERICH – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for the first four goals and the last four goals of the game as they dropped the Goderich Flyers 8-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Goderich-Maitland Recreation Complex.
The Patriots led 4-1 at the end of the first period after their four-goal spree that included three goals in a span of two minutes and 42 seconds. Goderich got the first goal of the second, but Mount Forest scored later in the period to carry a 6-2 lead into the third.
Jack Birkett had a hat trick for the Patriots while Ryley Cribbin added a pair of goals. Getting one goal apiece were Chet Philips, Payton McIsaac and Caleb Cribbin while McIsaac had three assists, Michael Stefanelli, Hayden Coulter and Luke Eurig had two each and Troy Weber, Ryley Cribbin, Philips, Liam Magill, Parker Miller and Riley Torrie each had one.
Jeff Fritzley and Mitch Fisher responded with the goals for Goderich while they had help from Parker Gibbings, Jack Stecho, Matt Bean and Kaden Hoggarth.
The Patriots outshot Goderich 46-25 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Mount Forest on two power plays and Goderich on seven.
Mason Kameka picked up the win in the Mount Forest net. He had 23 saves.
Jarod Fleming started and took the loss in the Goderich net. He had eight saves in the first period before being replaced by Spencer Lazarevich for the final two periods. Lazarevich made 28 saves.
The win gives the Patriots (10-2-1-0) a share of first place in the Pollock Division with the Wingham Ironmen (10-3-1-0) while Goderich (2-11-0-0) remains in the basement of the seven-team division.
The Patriots and Ironmen are to tangle Friday at 8 p.m. at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Complex.
