Fusion finishes sweep of minor bantam A final
FERGUS – The Centre Wellington Fusion celebrated on the ice at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex Saturday after completing a sweep of the Quinte West Hawks in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s minor bantam A final.
The Fusion won 1-0 Saturday to claim a 6-0 win in the six-point series.
Centre Wellington won the series opener 3-2 at Fergus March 16 before capturing a 3-1 win at Trenton March 17.
The title win is Centre Wellington’s first in the category.
The Fusion can hoist the championship trophy in celebration Sunday with a win over Garden City Merritton at Merritton Sunday afternoon.
The Fusion posted a 6-2 win at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus to grab a 4-2 lead in the six-point final.
Centre Wellington had opened the series with a 5-1 at the Elora arena March 16 while Garden City Merritton squared the series at a win apiece with a 3-2 win at Merritton March 17.
This is the first time either Centre Wellington or Garden City Merritton has reached the class final.
The Guelph Junior Gryphons won it last year for Guelph’s third championship in bantam AE2.
The Fusion fell behind 4-2 in the championship series with the Woolwich Wildcats after they were edged 2-1 Saturday night at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
The Fusion had opened the six-point series with a 3-2 win in overtime there March 16 before Woolwich responded with a 5-0 win in Elmira the following day.
Game 4 is set for Sunday at Elmira. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
Centre Wellington has never been in the category’s championship series before while the Wildcats are the defending champions.
