Fusion teams claim OT victories in OMHA final openers
FERGUS – Overtime was kind to the Centre Wellington Fusion in opening games of Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship series Saturday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
Fusion teams won in overtime in back-to-back games at the sportsplex.
The Fusion slipped by the Woolwich Wildcats 3-2 in overtime in the opening game of the six-point final Saturday.
Second game of the series is to go Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Elmira.
The Fusion ousted the Ajax Knights 6-2 in the semifinals while Woolwich swept the Erie North Shore Storm 6-0.
The Fusion and Wildcats are Tri-County rivals. Woolwich had finished first in the West Division at the completion of the regular season with 43 points, eight more than runner-up Centre Wellington.
The Fusion downed Garden City Merritton 5-1 in the opening game of the championship series Saturday at the Elora and District Community Centre.
Game 2 is set for Sunday at Merritton.
The Fusion gained their berth in the final after defeating the Clarington Toros 7-1 in the semifinals and Milton Winterhawks 6-2 in the quarter-finals.
Garden City Merritton swept the Erie North Shore Storm 6-0 in the semifinals and edged the Hespeler Shamrocks 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

The Fusion scored late in overtime to edge the Quinte West Hawks 3-2 in the opening game of the championship series Saturday at the sportsplex.
Game 2 is to go Sunday at 5 p.m. at Trenton.
Centre Wellington advanced to the final following a 6-2 win over the Glanbrook Rangers in the semifinals and 6-4 victory over the Burlington Eagles in the quarter-finals.
Quinte West gained its berth in the championship series with a 6-0 sweep of the Barrie Colts White in the semifinals and 6-2 victory over the Whitby Wildcats Blue in the quarter-finals.
