Gaels nip Bears to grab third in girls’ soccer standings

ORANGEVILLE – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels claimed a third-place finish in the District 10 high school girls’ soccer standings following a 1-0 victory over the Orangeville Bears Wednesday.

The match was the final game of the league’s regular season and was a make-up contest for a game postponed last week.

Purdy scored the goal for the Gaels while Shields recorded the shutout.

The result left the Gaels third at 4-2-1 and Orangeville fourth at 3-3-1.

Playoffs are to start Thursday with the quarter-finals meaning it’ll be the third game in as many days for both teams as both also had league matches Tuesday.

Both will be on their home fields with GCVI hosting the sixth-place Bishop Macdonell Celtics at the Gryphon Soccer Complex and Orangeville hosting the fifth-place Centennial Spartans. The other quarter-finals have the eighth-place Lourdes Crusaders playing the first-place Ross Royals at Ross and the second-place St. James Lions hosting the seventh-place Centre Wellington Falcons. All four games have 4 p.m. starting times.

Winners advance to Tuesday’s semifinals while the championship match is scheduled for May 20 at 1 p.m. at a site to be determined.
