Gaels seniors, Falcons juniors in boys’ rugby finals

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Centre Wellington Falcons captured their spots in Thursday’s District 10 high school boys’ rugby championship doubleheader in Fergus with semifinal victories Tuesday.

The Gaels advanced to the senior final by outlasting the Centennial Spartans 22-19 at Centennial in a game reminiscent of their season-opener there 23 days earlier.

GCVI won the see-saw battle with a late try moments after Centennial had gained the lead thanks to a successful convert.

Scott Cremasco had two tries for Centennial and Nathan Stam had one while Ethan Godinho kicked two converts.

GCVI’s scorers were not reported.

At Fergus Tuesday, the Centre Wellington Falcons grabbed their spot in Thursday’s junior final with a 26-14 victory over the Erin Raiders.

Scorers for the game were not reported.

Both of Tuesday’s winners will face unbeaten Ross Royals squads in Thursday’s finals at Victoria Park in Fergus.

The junior final is to go at 5:15 p.m. and the senior final is to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Ross beat GCVI 42-0 in the senior regular season and Centre Wellington 50-0 in the junior regular season.

Since all are AAA squads, the winner of each game advance to the CWOSSA AAA championship tournament at Waterloo May 24 and 26.

Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne advances to the CWOSSA A/AA tournament at Cambridge in both senior and junior while Erin also gets a spot in the junior division. That tournament is set for May 25 and 26.
