Gaels, Spartans to fight for senior volleyball title

GUELPH – The championship combatants in both the District 10 high school senior and junior girls’ volleyball leagues have been decided.

The Guelph CVI Green Gaels are to battle the Centennial Spartans in the senior final Friday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre while the Orangeville Bears and Ross Royals are to meet in the junior final at 6 p.m. at the GGAC.

The Gaels kept their unbeaten season in D10 play going with a 3-0 sweep of the St. James Lions in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Gaels won 25-12, 25-15, 25-17.

The Spartans also swept the Royals, but the scores were a lot closer as Centennial won 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.

Those wins set up a championship match between schools with varying histories in senior girls’ volleyball in recent years.

The Gaels will be looking for their first title win since 2007 and ninth overall as they previously won in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1978, 1985, 1986 and 2004.

Since GCVI’s last title win, the Spartans have won the D10 crown four times (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016) and also been in the final two other times – 2009 and 2014. Centennial’s down as the winner of 14 championships.

GCVI finished first at the end of the regular season at 14-0 while Centennial was second at 10-4, Ross third at 9-5 and St. James fifth at 8-6.

Orangeville gained its berth in the final with a 3-1 win over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics.

The Bears prevailed 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18.

Ross surprised GCVI with a sweep in the other semifinal.

The Royals won three close sets 25-20, 27-25, 25-22.

Orangeville and GCVI had finished tied for first at 11-3 while Ross was third at 10-4 and Bishop Mac fourth at 8-6.

The Bears will be looking for their first D10 title since 2011 and ninth overall while Ross has won it 10 times, the last time being in 2016.
