Gargoyles edge Demons for first victory of season

ETOBICOKE – The Grand River Gargoyles struck for their first win of the AFL Ontario Australian football season Saturday when they slipped by the High Park Demons 29-27 at the Humber College South field.

The Gargs jumped ahead early and led at the end of each quarter. However, they had to hold off the Demons in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

Guelph led 9-2 at the end of the first quarter, 16-9 at halftime and 25-12 after the third quarter.

Tyler Schwartzentruber, Jeremy Schwartzentruber and Josh Woods each scored a goal for the Gargs.

Matt Gallus had two goals for High Park while Guillaume Horreard also scored a goal.

The win leaves both teams with 1-2-0 records, same as the Hamilton Wildcats and Toronto Eagles. A formula that considers points for and against is used to rank the teams.

That formula leaves the Demons fourth at 115.18 per cent and they’re followed by Hamilton at 101.23, the Eagles at 44.18 and the Gargs at 33.33.

The Ottawa Swans (3-0-0) lead at 530.51 while the Toronto Dingos (3-0-0) are second at 332.91, Toronto Rebels third at 2-1-0 and Central Blues eighth at 0-3-0.

The Gargs are to host Ottawa Saturday at 2 p.m. at Margaret Greene Park.
