GCVI and Bishop Mac to battle for senior volleyball crown

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels rallied to win their semifinal to remain in the running for their third consecutive District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball championship.

The Gaels, winners of the 2018 and 2019 senior titles, came back to edge the Ross Royals, winners of the 2017 senior title, 3-2 in Tuesday’s semifinals.

GCVI took the opening set of the match 25-22 with a lot of scrambling before the host Royals shot ahead with 25-20 and 25-15 victories. However, the Gaels came back with wins in the final two sets for the victory. The Gaels won 25-20 and 15-9.

Ross finished the regular season atop the league with a 13-1 record. They were followed by the Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 12-2, Centre Wellington Falcons at 9-5, St. James Lions at 8-6, GCVI at 7-7, Centennial Spartans at 4-10, Orangeville Bears at 3-11 and Lourdes Crusaders at 0-14.

The Gaels are to face Bishop Mac in Thursday’s final.

The Celtics swept Centre Wellington 26-24, 25-23 and 25-21 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

In the quarter-finals, Ross swept Lourdes 3-0, Bishop Mac defeated Orangeville 3-1, Centre Wellington downed Centennial 3-1 and GCVI swept St. James 3-0.

Thursday’s final at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.

 

Junior

GCVI and Ross are to meet in Thursday’s final after both won their Tuesday semifinals.

The Gaels outlasted St. James 3-2 in their semifinal, winning 6-25, 25-14, 25-16, 20-25, 15-7.

The Royals swept Bishop Mac 3-0 in their semifinal. Ross won 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.

Ross finished the regular season in first place at a perfect 14-0 while GCVI was second at 11-3. St. James was third at 9-5 while Centennial and Bishop Mac were both at 7-7, Centre Wellington was at 4-10 and both Orangeville and Lourdes were at 2-12.

In the quarter-finals, Ross swept Lourdes 3-0, GCVI swept Orangeville 3-0, St. James defeated Centre Wellington 3-1 and Bishop Mac swept Centennial 3-0.

Game time for Thursday’s final at the GGAC is 6 p.m.
