GCVI and Norwell out of junior soccer title tournament

GUELPH – The District 10 and 4 champions were the teams left behind following the opening day of the two-day CWOSSA high school junior boys’ soccer championship tournament at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Neither the District 10 champion Guelph CVI Green Gaels nor the District 4 champion Norwell Varsity Reds advanced to the second day of the competition.

Two teams in each of the two pools gained berths in Friday’s semifinals.

GCVI was blanked twice in Pool B as they were defeated 3-0 by the Cameron Heights Gaels of Kitchener and 7-0 by the St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener.

Daniel Larach, Rowen Fisler and Jeremiah Osorio scored for Cameron Heights in its win over the Green Gaels.

Luka Romano had four goals for St. Mary’s against the Green Gaels. The other goals were scored by Alex Savic, Santi Castro and Marcus Barichello.

Cameron Heights gained a first-place finish in the pool with a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s. Jaylan Raymond scored the game’s only goal.

Norwell also suffered a pair of losses in Pool A as the Varsity Reds of Palmerston were defeated 2-0 by the Resurrection Phoenix of Kitchener and 3-1 by the Waterloo CI Vikings.

Scorers for Resurrection in its win over Norwell were unavailable.

Chris Lopez scored for Norwell in the loss to WCI while Hriday Patel had two goals for the Vikings and Marten Pavlov had the other one.

WCI finished first in the pool as the Vikings also edged Resurrection 1-0. Jacob Thedosiou had the goal.

The semifinals are set for Friday at 9:30 a.m. St. Mary’s is to play WCI on the East Field and Resurrection and Cameron Heights are to battle on the West Field.

The winners are to advance to the 12 p.m. final on the West Field.
